Zerofuturism, the Georgia-based artist who first garnered attention for his atmospheric ambient works on YouTube, has recently unveiled ‘EVO 2’. A kaleidoscopic collection of tracks that blur the lines between ambient sounds and potent Drum and Bass, ‘EVO 2’ charts Zerofuturism’s journey from the fringes of electronic music to carving out his own dynamic world.
This isn't just a follow-up; it's a statement of artistic intent, a bold and experimental project that blends genres and pushes boundaries. Created in collaboration with several producers, including Alv-01 and Yunfpuff, the album takes hold across 16 captivating tracks, bringing a meticulous style and constantly shifting energy into the mix. Initially slated for release in 2023, the release of ‘EVO 2’ was pushed backed as Zerofuturism wasn’t satisfied with the weight and sound of the tracks. This delay gave him time to refine and amplify the album, ensuring the final product was exactly as he intended it to be.
Drawing inspiration from artists such as Sewerslvt, mindvacy, and tokyopill, ‘EVO 2’ is a multi-layered sonic experience well worth taking. Tracks like ‘Flame’ and ‘Promised Future’ perfectly showcase Zerofuturism's ability to create textured ambient spaces that are punctuated by driving Drum and Bass rhythms. Elsewhere, ‘IShowSpeed’ and ‘Superconductor’ dive headfirst into the frenetic energy of Breakcore, delivering a rapturous sonic assault highlighted by deft, complex sampling and experimental flourishes.
While the driving Drum and Bass sounds shine as the album’s centrepiece, it has it’s more reflective and almost tender moments as well. Tracks like ‘Moving Castle’ and ‘With You’ offer a more emotive and expressive counterpoint to the chaotic Breakbeat sounds, letting the album breathe, even if momentarily, before turning up the electronic-laced beats once more.
While for some, ‘EVO 2’ might serve as a welcome introduction to Zerofuturism, it also marks the end of an era. As a reflection of his evolving artistry, Zerofuturism plans to separate his musical endeavours, with his ambient works continuing under his established name, while the Drum and Bass and Breakcore projects will be released under a new alias, Shiora. This decision marks a new chapter for the artist, allowing both sides of his creative personality to flourish independently.
