Yumi Zouma has always been the gold standard for shimmering, ethereal pop, but their fifth studio album, 'No Love Lost To Kindness', feels like the moment the mist finally clears. Released via Nettwerk, this record is a bold departure from the "soft-focus" textures of their earlier work. After a decade of refining their craft across the globe, the New Zealand quartet has traded their signature ambiguity for a sound that is noticeably heavier, punchier, and far more emotionally raw. Recorded during a collaborative stint in Mexico City, the album’s twelve tracks see the band evolving from a studio project into a formidable rock outfit.
The standout arrival alongside the LP is 'Cowboy Without A Clue', a sprawling, sci-fi-inflected anthem that tackles the band’s own reality: the struggle of long-distance connection. It is a track of immense scale, featuring sitar contributions from Tamil artist Kumar Kishor that add a grounded, earthy texture to the track's cosmic ambitions. The band explains: "Long-distance relationships are tough. Despite deep roots and genuine intentions, maintaining positivity and meaning can be challenging. For us, distance has defined our creativity and friendship for over a decade, though we've never directly tackled this theme in our music until now."
This vulnerability is the album's heartbeat. To illustrate the strain of being worlds apart, the band uses a futuristic lens: "We imagined the ultimate long-distance relationship in the year 2099, with a cowboy on Earth and an astronaut on Pluto navigating their distance as a metaphor for what it feels like to be apart from the one you love... Being in two very different worlds." It is a poignant reflection of the touring life, chasing dreams while leaving pieces of oneself behind.
Produced by Josh Burgess and Charlie Ryder, the record is a masterclass in clarity. Recent singles like "95" and "Blister" showcase a band leaning into big hooks and unfiltered sentiment. As the group puts it, "Lyrically and sonically, this record embraces big hooks and unfiltered personal sentiment much more than our previous work... This album is us becoming a rock band and leaving dream pop behind."
By ditching the polish for power, Yumi Zouma has delivered their most honest work to date, proving that no amount of time-zone friction can dull their undeniable chemistry. You can stream the new album now, and for more, keep up with the band on Instagram, TikTok, and X.
