YAGKI Faces Her Past With Raw Resilience In New Single ‘Charcoal’

Sydney-born, LA-based powerhouse YAGKI has never been one to shy away from the uncomfortable. From her Lebanese roots in Western Sydney to the bright, cut-throat lights of Los Angeles, her trajectory has been defined by a fierce, self-made independence. However, her latest offering, ‘Charcoal’, isn’t just a new track; it is a profound reclamation of a story she almost didn’t live to tell.

Following a string of DIY global tours that saw her conquering stages across the UK, US, and Australia without a label or manager in sight, YAGKI returns with her most visceral work to date. ‘Charcoal’ is a haunting dive into alt-rock and emo-pop, but its foundation is built on a terrifyingly real event: a drug overdose that left her in a coma at the age of three.

The track was born from a chilling discovery—medical records from the night of her admission. Reading these documents allowed YAGKI to peer into a void in her memory, confronting the "survivor’s guilt" of a trauma she was too young to consciously recall.

“‘Charcoal’ is about me swallowing five ecstasy tablets at three-years-old while in my mother’s care and falling into a coma,” confesses YAGKI. “It was inspired by the medical records I retrieved from when I was first brought into hospital, and reading their extremely graphic details. One of the first things that stood out was that ‘Charcoal’ was given to me to help try and get the tablets out of my system.”

Collaborating with producer Nat Sherwood (BESTIES, Yours Truly), YAGKI crafts a soundscape that feels both claustrophobic and expansive. Her vocals carry a precarious weight, sounding as though they might buckle under the gravity of the lyrics, yet they remain anchored by a grit that has become her trademark.

The emotional core of the song lies in the disconnect between the clinical facts of her survival and her own lack of memory.

“Even though the records were mine - with my name, birthdate, parent’s names - I felt so far away from the story. I had so much guilt for the younger version of me that had to go through it and I feel guilty because I don’t remember anything of it.”

For her loyal fanbase, affectionately dubbed ‘The Yappers’, this level of transparency is exactly why they show up. As YAGKI prepares to head back to Australia this April for a run of headline shows in Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Sydney, and Melbourne, ‘Charcoal’ stands as a defiant precursor to her upcoming EP. It’s a reminder that while the past can be a dark place, there is immense power in turning that darkness into art.
