Portland heavy outfit To Bloom have unleashed ‘Pendulum’, a soaring, emotionally charged single offering an intimate look into their upcoming full-length debut album, ‘Chimera’. Moving beyond the conventional constraints of alternative rock, the five-piece weave a textured tapestry of sound that balances heavy riffs with soulful introspection.
Built around a creative collaboration formed during their high school days in 2010, primary songwriters Bruno López-Vargas (vocals) and Kevin Merrill Payne (guitar) have spent more than a decade refining their shared artistic direction. That core foundation recently expanded to include studio and live performance veterans Logan Candelaria (drums), Nolan Plummer (bass), and Cory Wolfe (guitar). Together, the quintet deliver a sound that feels both intricately calculated and effortlessly organic.
Lyrically, ‘Pendulum’ dives headfirst into accountability, grief, and the difficult road to personal recovery. Frontman Bruno López-Vargas laid his soul bare when describing the honest inspiration behind the track:
“The song is about a relationship that my alcoholism ultimately took from me. It looks back on the distance I created, the mistakes I made, and the difficulty of accepting love when I didn’t believe I deserved it. At the same time, it’s ultimately about growth - learning from that damage, letting go of the person I was, and trying to find myself again in what was left behind.”
Musically, the single thrives on brilliant contrast. Unwilling to settle inside a single stylistic box, the arrangement glides fluidly between post-hardcore intensity, progressive rock structural shifts, and vocal hooks heavily influenced by R&B. Subtle Latin-inspired rhythmic patterns lock in with driving basslines and explosive guitars, mirroring the exact emotional tug-of-war detailed in López-Vargas’s lyrics.
