The Velvet Club Get Reborn on Retro-Fueled New Single, ‘Anything’

Melbourne’s own The Velvet Club are back with a bang, dropping their infectious new single ‘Anything’ alongside the charming B-side, ‘It Will Never Be Enough’. This double release is the first taste of new music since their highly praised 'Space Between' EP in 2024, and it heralds an exciting, nostalgia-drenched new chapter for the Aussie indie stalwarts.

Following a frantic couple of years—full of national tours, festival slots, and tight release schedules—frontman AJ Tilyard found himself hitting a wall. Needing a breather to recharge, he stepped away from the relentless cycle. Yet, as he tried to switch off from music entirely, the songs began to flow more freely than ever before. This period of genuine, pressure-free creation resulted in some of the band's most honest and heartfelt material yet.

‘Anything’ emerged as one of the very first tracks from this productive spell, pulling AJ back to the sounds that initially ignited his passion. He spent time digging up live videos of the indie legends who dominated his teenage bedroom walls: The Strokes, The Vaccines, The Drums, and The Smiths.

“Writing for the sake of writing music for myself, without the band’s career or direction in mind, I found myself pulled towards nostalgia - songs that I loved growing up, and bands that made me fall in love with music in the first place,” AJ explains. “This song really sparked a kind of born-again love for classic indie rock within me and acted as the key to unlocking a much bigger collection of songs to be released over the next part of The Velvet Club’s life.”

The result is a track that, while instantly familiar, is perfectly filtered through a modern Australian lens, touching on the inevitable triumphs and struggles of life in your twenties, from breakups to mental health battles.

The band's current chapter isn’t just looking overseas for inspiration, either. AJ credits his peers in the vibrant Melbourne music scene—bands like The Belair Lip Bombs, Radio Free Alice, and sleepazoid—for fuelling his creative fire. “I feel very lucky to call these bands friends and to watch them take over the world has been so inspiring to me,” he says, highlighting the exceptional songwriting coming out of the very suburbs they frequent.

Recorded with Luke Thomas at Taste Police in Brunswick, and expertly mixed and mastered by Scott Hoorscroft and George Georgiadis respectively, ‘Anything’ is the trailblazer for a larger body of work expected to land in 2026.

As a nod to the great indie releases of the 2000s, The Velvet Club are treating fans to B-sides with every single. The B-side ‘It Will Never Be Enough’ is a raw, Strokes-esque bedroom demo that features classic jangle guitar and distorted vocals. It’s a special glimpse into the band’s process, being the first track entirely performed, produced, and mixed by AJ himself, proving that sometimes, stripping everything back is the key to creating something truly special.
