French punk rock trio The Tensions are taking a scenic detour. Hailing from Mont-de-Marsan, the three-piece have spent the last four years earning their stripes with hard-hitting, high-energy anthems. However, their latest single, ‘Tangerine’, sees them trading raw aggression for a softer, dreamlike power-pop landscape.
This sonic shift is an intentional leap into new territory. While earlier releases thrived on propulsive punk rhythms, ‘Tangerine’ expands into melodic guitar hooks that stand in stark contrast to the rest of their back catalogue. Drummer and vocalist Robin Jourdan shares that the track is about "friendship, love, breakups, daydreams in bed, the brain remembering good times alongside bad ones, and the way overthinking can spiral until it becomes uncontrollable." It beautifully captures that vulnerable feeling of losing command of your own thoughts, using infectious melodies rather than loud distortion to deliver the message.
According to Jourdan, the track came together organically during a relaxed songwriting session. The composition initially started with "gibberish, just messing around with sounds to find what worked best," before the structured melody began to take shape. This playful experimentation paid off, injecting a genuine warmth and charm into the track that proves the band refuse to be pigeonholed.
The accompanying music video, directed by Alban Gatti, amplifies this surreal atmosphere. The crew gathered at 7:00 am on La Salie-Nord beach to catch the early morning light and avoid the crowds. Gatti used the sweeping dunes and coastal vegetation to create a visual landscape suspended between a classic beach and an isolated desert. This otherworldly setting perfectly mirrors the track's themes of drifting through memories and getting lost in your own head.
‘Tangerine’ is a confident, refreshing evolution from a band completely comfortable with taking creative risks. It is the perfect teaser for what lies ahead, with their highly anticipated debut album slated for arrival in September 2026.
