German-born, Hamilton-based singer-songwriter Soulty has returned with her moving new single, ‘All Black’, released earlier this month. Turning personal reflections into a powerful anthem of solidarity, the track weaves together blues, soul, gospel, and rock into her signature folk-infused pop sound. But it’s the addition of a remarkable pop-up choir—featuring over 20 women from regional Victoria—that elevates the song into an inspiring celebration of community and resilience.
Originally beginning as an intimate, deeply personal exploration of enduring difficult times and finding connection, ‘All Black’ quickly outgrew its demo phase. Recognising the song's underlying message of collective strength, Soulty reached out on social media, inviting local women from Hamilton and surrounding rural areas to lend their voices. Supported by grant funding from the Southern Grampians Shire, the resulting recording session transformed into something much greater than just putting vocals to tape—it became a tangible expression of shared experience and unity.
This distinctive approach to songwriting hasn't gone unnoticed; ‘All Black’ recently earned Soulty a spot as a finalist in the Bendigo Songwriter Prize. It’s a fitting nod for an artist whose musical foundation was laid early, growing up as one of seven children to classical musician parents. Drawing on a life lived between cultures since moving to Australia over a decade ago, Soulty’s music navigates the complex terrain of identity, belonging, and the search for home.
Currently, Soulty is busy crafting her second studio album alongside Fraser Montgomery of The Aviary Recording Studio, Jason Mulley from The Settlement Band, and ‘All Black’ producer Adam McCarron. The upcoming record promises an expanded sonic palette—introducing electronic textures, synths, and prominent bass lines—while charting an emotional journey from crisis and grief toward healing and joy. While fans eagerly await the fuller production of the new album, ‘All Black’ serves as a beautiful reminder of the power of coming together.
