Kauai-born prodigy Pepper Diaz might only be 16 years old, but her musical footprint already rivals that of seasoned industry veterans. Having cut her teeth at legendary global venues like Los Angeles’s Viper Room and Whisky a Go Go, as well as Liverpool’s historic Cavern Club, Diaz has spent her formative years absorbing the DNA of classic rock and modern pop. Her impressive resume includes jamming alongside icons like Stewart Copeland and Nancy Wilson at Rock & Roll Fantasy Camps, alongside collaborating with former Plush guitarist Bella Perron. Now, backed by her formidable band, Pepper and the Scoville Scale, the young singer-songwriter is carving out her own lane under the Young Outlaw Music banner.
The group's latest single, ‘Long Game’, released late last month, perfectly encapsulates Diaz’s lyric-first philosophy. Raised in a deeply musical household, Diaz treats songwriting as a vessel for genuine lived experience, working hand-in-hand with her guitarist to translate the specific sonic textures in her head into reality. On ‘Long Game’, that chemistry results in a beautifully balanced pop-rock track built upon a sturdy, mid-tempo drum groove.
Weighty electric guitars provide a gritty foundation, while shimmering acoustic layers cut through the mix to inject a sense of organic motion. Throughout, the band understands the power of restraint; they cleverly avoid overcrowding the arrangement, letting the verses breathe before expanding naturally into an undeniable chorus.
At the heart of the track, Diaz’s striking vocals are unforgettable. She navigates the melody with impressive composure, yet there is an undeniable, simmering urgency beneath the surface that prevents the song from leaning too heavily into polished pop territory.
Managed by Young Outlaw Music and currently working on a remix project with renowned producer Mr. Mig, Pepper and The Scoville Scale are proving that authenticity and drive matter far more than age. ‘Long Game’ is available to stream now on all major digital platforms.
