Since emerging from the vibrant music scene of Richmond, Virginia, in 2018, Followship have been busily refining a brand of progressive post-hardcore that refuses to sit idle. From the riff-heavy sound of their debut LP, ‘Violet Teenage Violence’, to the refined aggression of 2023’s ‘Stigma’, the band has consistently bridged the gap between raw emotion and instrumental precision.
Now, with the arrival of their latest single, ‘Alligator Fears Crocodile Tears’, Followship are stepping into a sprawling, cinematic territory, delivering their most daring creative shift to date. While Followship have always possessed a polished, punchy edge, the new single feels like a widening of the lens. The track is a sonically-charged cut steeped in structural ambition, backed seamlessly back the rhythmic bounce of classic new jack swing. It’s a bristling sound, creating a groove-laden undercurrent that feels entirely fresh within the post-hardcore landscape.
Lyrically, the song is a deep dive into the murky waters of a toxic, star-crossed romance. Written from the perspective of a partner trapped in the aftermath of a volatile relationship, it’s raw, intimate, and for most, painfully relatable. To match this emotional weight, the band collaborated with indie filmmaker Seyla Hossaini for a music video that is as visually arresting as the song is sonically dense, providing a dreamlike backdrop to the track’s explosive crescendos.
Having cut their teeth on the DIY circuit and shared stages with heavyweights like Hail the Sun, Blessthefall, and Jason Richardson, Followship have long been praised for their locked-in live chemistry. While fan-favourite tracks like ‘Special’ and ‘The Revolution Might Be Televised After All’ cemented their reputation for high-octane chaos, ‘Alligator Fears Crocodile Tears’ proves they are equally adept at crafting atmosphere and tension.
