The quiet hours after a midnight departure often spark the most vivid mental cinema, and it is exactly this restless frequency that J Nui and Martine Kite tune into with their latest release. A slick, brooding collaboration titled ‘SEE U 2’, the track serves as a sonic bridge between Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley and the deep, percussive influences of the African continent, resulting in a late-night anthem for the overthinkers.
Crafted entirely within the walls of Soundbox Studios, the single is a testament to J Nui’s technical finesse. As the creative alias of producer Ben Rangi, J Nui has evolved significantly since his 2005 origins of tinkering with a "Limewire-sponsored" copy of FL Studio 5. His production here is lean and purposeful; staccato rhythms provide a jittery heartbeat while silky, atmospheric layers wrap around the vocals like a cold breeze.
The track thrives on the chemistry between the two Meanjin-based artists. Martine Kite, whose heritage traces back to the Nande tribe in Butembo, DRC, brings a rhythmic fluidity that feels lived-in. She explains, "Growing up surrounded by Congolese and East African music, rhythm has always felt instinctive to me, something that lives in my body rather than something I learned. Performing allows me to fully express that connection, blending emotion, movement, and storytelling into my sound."
Lyrically, the song navigates the fragility of connection when physical presence is removed. J Nui notes that the track explores the "emotional whiplash" of modern romance. "'SEE U 2' captures the emotional whiplash of being sure about someone and then questioning everything the moment you're apart," he says. "Across the collaboration, we unpack that push–pull: reassurance vs. doubt, presence vs. absence, and the simple question that sits underneath it all - do you still feel it the way I do?"
Both artists are no strangers to the stage, with J Nui previously supporting Genesis Owusu and Kite opening for Omah Lay. This seasoned confidence is audible in the way their voices intertwine, eventually mounting to a climax that feels both heavy with anxiety and light with hope.
You can find ‘SEE U 2’ on all major streaming platforms now. To stay updated on future movements from this powerhouse duo, be sure to follow J Nui and Martine Kite on Instagram.
