Dexter and The Moonrocks Unleash Raw New Single ‘Freakin’ Out’

The self-proclaimed "sad space cowboys" are back. After racking up a staggering 5 million views across social media, West Texas breakout stars Dexter and The Moonrocks have officially dropped their latest high-octane anthem, ‘Freakin’ Out’. Released via Severance Records/Big Loud Rock, the track is a masterclass in the band’s self-defined "Western Space Grunge" — a gritty, experimental fusion of red-dirt country storytelling and the distorted angst of 90s alternative.

Accompanying the release is a moody new visualizer that captures the band’s DIY spirit, featuring a chaotic performance in an empty warehouse that perfectly mirrors the track’s internal friction. Speaking on the inspiration behind the new cut, the band admitted it dives into the mental toll of modern life.

"Freakin’ Out speaks to a lot of different issues that people tend to face – fear, loneliness, and anxiety, and all that other terrible shit that we all have – and how sometimes there's nothing you can do about any of it, except freak the fuck out every now and then."

It has been a meteoric rise for the Abilene-born quartet. Once a ragtag group comprising a fry cook, an oil field operator, a concrete surface decorator, and a kids’ baseball coach, they’ve transformed from a grassroots Texas phenomenon into one of the most dominant forces in modern rock. ‘Freakin’ Out’ serves as the follow-up to their sombre February single ‘Flavorless’, continuing a momentum that hasn’t slowed since 2024’s ‘Sad in Carolina’ spent eight weeks at the top of the Alternative Radio charts.

Their 2025 was equally busy, seeing the release of the EPs ‘Happy To Be Here’ — featuring the chart-smashing ‘Ritalin’ — and the small-town tribute ‘Donkey Flats’. Between sharing stages with heavyweights like Cage The Elephant and Red Clay Strays, and making waves at the Vans Warped Tour, the band has proven that their stadium-sized sound is built for the big stage.

Fans can catch the band currently on their Welcome To The Donkey Flats Tour, which continues through June. If you miss the headline dates, they’re also slated for what promise to be electric festival appearances at CottonFest and Rocklahoma later this summer.

Crank up the volume and stream ‘Freakin’ Out’ on all platforms now, and be sure to follow Dexter and The Moonrocks on Instagram to see where the space grunge revolution heads next.
