When a traditional storyteller crosses paths with a seasoned electronic producer, the results usually push boundaries. Sydney's music scene has just birthed one of the year's most intriguing sonic intersections, courtesy of rising singer-songwriter Angie Brooks and industry veteran DJ Rob Tech (Rob Swan). Their fresh collaborative EP, ‘When I'm Gone’, effortlessly bridges two entirely different musical worlds.
The release marks a fascinating stylistic pivot for Brooks. Raised in regional North Queensland, her musical identity was forged in country music, a background that naturally evolved into her current pop-country sound. Having spent over a decade sharpening her craft at local Sydney gigs and catching the attention of Queensland radio, Brooks brings a grounded, narrative-driven depth to the project.
On the other side of the studio boards is DJ Rob Tech, a producer with over ten years of experience navigating the electronic landscape. Rooted in early inspirations like ATB, Armin Van Buuren, and Paul Van Dyk, Swan used his childhood piano training and music theory expertise to build a prolific career. With previous major chart placements under his belt—including his 2016 track ‘Total Combustion’ peaking at #16 and his remix of Steve Hill & Technikal's ‘Running Up That Hill’ hitting #8 on the chill charts—he knows exactly how to curate atmosphere.
The new EP functions as a hybrid creation. The song is a fusion of Angie’s country music storytelling roots layered with the Balearic dance production of DJ Rob Tech. Lyrically, it dives into the bitter realities of unreciprocated affection, as the song tells the story of loving someone from afar, but they only miss them when they need them.
Rather than sticking to a single lane, ‘When I’m Gone’ is a 3-track EP that consists of Radio Edit, Extended Mix and a Chillout Version perfect for clubs, lounging by the beach, cafes, restaurants and radio. Whether you need an energetic anthem for a packed dancefloor or a laid-back backdrop for a sunset drink, the duo has the vibe covered.
‘When I'm Gone’ is available to stream now on all major digital platforms. To keep up with future releases and upcoming live dates, make sure to follow DJ Rob Tech on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok to keep up with his upcoming releases.
