AmyJo Doh & The Spangles Sound the Charge with 'It's a Girl!'

Madrid-based outfit AmyJo Doh & The Spangles are making serious noise with their brand-new double single 'It's a Girl!', out now via Strap Originals. Fronted by British singer-songwriter AmyJo Doherty, the four-piece have carved out a reputation as one of Europe’s most fiercely tireless live acts. Following two full-length records — 2017's 'Calle De The Spangles' and 2024's 'SpangleLandia' — the group continue to build momentum, using their platform to deliver sharp commentary alongside infectious garage-punk riffs.

The title track subverts expectations right out of the gate. What begins with the theatrical absurdity of a gender-reveal party — complete with pink and blue frosting — quickly expands into a rallying call against historical erasure. The single lists women deliberately written out of history and rejects the systemic patterns that keep them quiet. It is a quintessential display of "punk with a purpose" — furious, energetic, and undeniably danceable.

Speaking about the song's underlying message, Doherty explained: “It’s not about gender. It’s about reconnecting with the feminine energy in all of us — compassion, respect, harmony, empathy. Look where all that anger and ‘divide and conquer’ energy has actually gotten us. Enough is enough. The time has come for change, and it starts with each one of us.”

Flip the single over and you will find the Spanish-language B-side 'Menú del Día', an affectionate nod to the vibrant atmosphere and midday dining of Madrid's traditional neighbourhood tascas. The band maintain an open-door policy for all listeners at their table, with one clear exception: racists and fascists can leave.

Having built up their endurance through a gruelling schedule of over 100 gig dates annually — including tours with The Libertines and AmyJo’s brother, Pete Doherty — the Spangles remain unstoppable on stage. Fresh off a string of UK appearances, the quartet of Doherty (Vocals), German Ormaechea Hernandez (Bass), Matty Tyack (Guitar), and Jorge Javier Armijos (Drums) are taking this new material straight to live audiences, including a single launch event at Madrid's Sala La Trinchera partnered with Amnesty International.

Stream 'It's a Girl!' on all major digital platforms today, and keep up with AmyJo Doh & The Spangles on Instagram and Facebook for upcoming tour updates and behind-the-scenes content.
