The Sydney indie landscape is shifting once again as Mega Fäuna charge into 2026 with the reveal of their upcoming album, 'softmore'. Following the cult success of their 2023 'Fibonacci Sequins' EP, the five-piece are stepping into a bolder, more defiant creative era, marked by a palpable studio chemistry that has become the very marrow of their new material.
Born from a desire to bypass the usual inner-city music circles, founders Tess Wilkin and Freyja Fox intentionally sought out collaborators from the fringes—women who weren't necessarily established on the circuit or even proficient with instruments. This unconventional origin story has yielded a line-up boasting members from The Buoys, Sweetie, Wiles, and Skeleten, each bringing a distinct perspective to their signature blend of infectious indie hooks and sun-drenched Australiana.
After teasing the record with the hazy ‘sleep deceit’ and January’s ‘lifelike’, the band have now shared their most compelling offering yet: ‘heartbeat’. The track, which serves as a magnetic introduction to the new year, was captured at Stranded Recording Studio in Bellambi, situated on the lands of the Dharawal Wodi Wodi. Under the guidance of producer Guy Fenech, the group have crafted a song that explores the dizzying unpredictability of modern life, anchored by the rhythmic constancy of the human body.
“It's about the fact that time keeps ticking, life keeps cruising and whether or not we want it to and our bodies just keep doing their secret, magic jobs inside of us without us even thinking about it or trying to control it," the band explains. "It’s kinda cool to think about this inner life that just goes on and on despite the kinda day you are having, despite the words you are saying, the games you are playing, or the emotions you are feeling."
The track acts as both a marvel at our biological resilience and a reflection on the daily hustle. As the band puts it: "It’s a little bit marvelling at the body and a bit about the whirlwind that life can sometimes feel like. Day in, day out racing yourself to get everything done and teetering between feeling like things are staying on track and almost losing a grip. But always it just comes back to that heartbeat that keeps on keeping rhythm despite it all and quietly wondering at what else might be going on beneath all the skin and muscle and blood.”
With 'softmore' on the horizon, Mega Fäuna are no longer just an emerging name—they are the heartbeat of the Sydney scene. Join the band today on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and X.
