Second Idol, a band quickly becoming a cornerstone of Australia's alternative music scene, has released their visceral new single, 'Spineless Wonders'. Out now on Gloomshift Records, the track is a powerful and seething indictment of authority figures and the deceptive nature of unchecked power. It’s a testament to the band’s unflinching honesty and their ability to craft music that is both menacing and unforgettable.
Following in the footsteps of post-punk trailblazers such as Placebo, Siouxsie and The Banshees, and Savages, Second Idol channels the same raw originality and bold innovation. Their music is not just a sonic force; it’s a critical lens through which they examine themes of power, gender, and identity, while shedding light on the darker aspects of social and systemic manipulation. This new single is a perfect example of their artistic mission—it’s a track that grabs you by the collar and doesn't let go.
Lead singer and guitarist Kate Farquharson explains the genesis of the song: "It began as a slinking and syncopated gothic instrumental. There was something sinister and sinuous about it. I began penning lyrics that twisted through the melody, alluding to power, control and corruption." She continues, "Inherent to the song is a critique of the ‘Spineless Wonder,’ which can be interpreted as a cowardly spectacle or the ill repute of individual cowardice. In this song, the people regarded as ‘spineless’ are politicians and individuals in exploitative positions of power. Here, the individual is void of consequence, and through corruption proceeds to ‘wander free’."
Second Idol’s music is deeply informed by the lived experiences of its members. With Kate (Sri Lankan/Scottish), Sunny Josan (Palestinian/Indian), and Afeef Iqbal (Pakistani) all being second-generation Australians, their diverse backgrounds across cultural heritage, gender identities, and sexualities are the bedrock of their art. This hybridity gives their music a unique strength and authenticity, ensuring their message resonates with a powerful clarity.
'Spineless Wonders' was brought to life by the production, mixing, and mastering expertise of Clayton Segelov, with recording assistance from Angie Watson at The Brain Recording Studios in Sydney. Adding to the excitement, the single will also be accompanied by a remix from their labelmates, INAUGURAL, offering another sonic dimension to the track’s already potent soundscape.
