Today, we’re thrilled to premiere 'Reaching Towards the Sun', the captivating debut EP from Melbourne's own Powder Blue, officially out on 11th July. Having already teased us with the exquisite singles 'Reaching Towards the Sun' and 'Your Touch', the full EP is a stunning collection of tracks that are nothing short of luminous. This EP is a vibrant explosion of sound, drenched in sunshine and shimmering with an infectious energy that feels both refined and utterly exhilarating.
From start to finish, 'Reaching Towards the Sun' is a tapestry woven from the diverse musical threads of each band member. Their collective passion for classic Australian indie forms the backbone, beautifully enriched by nuanced elements of jazz, funk, R&B, and reggae. Lyrically, the EP digs into expansive themes of light, human connection, and personal evolution, embodying a quest for meaning and satisfaction found through the bonds of friendship, love, and an unwavering devotion to music.
What started as intimate bedroom demos between siblings has organically blossomed into the polished, cohesive unit we hear today. Frontman Rama, who had a backlog of songs waiting to see the light of day, found the project truly taking shape when brother Narada joined the creative jams. The rest of the line-up fell into place with a serendipitous ease: Rohan, after attending one session, became an indispensable part of the group, while Alex was recruited after a well-timed ad following his move to Melbourne. The final piece of the puzzle, Louis, was discovered captivating an audience at a local gig in Fitzroy.
Beyond the studio, Powder Blue are quickly solidifying their reputation as a must-see live act. Recent support slots for Vanilla Gorilla at the Brunswick Ballroom and The Velvet Club at The Evelyn have showcased their dynamic stage presence and tight musicianship, leaving audiences eager for more.
With the exception of drums, all instruments were recorded in the comfort of the band’s home studio. The rhythmic backbone was laid down at Wastelands Studios, nestled just outside Caragabal in rural NSW. All tracks were penned by the talented Rama Powderly, with mixing duties expertly handled by Levi Russell, Alex Mitchell (on 'Interlude'), and Shane McCahon (on 'Your Touch'). The final sonic polish was applied by mastering engineer Levi Russell.
Keep an eye out for the official release on July 11th and be sure to follow the band today on Instagram and TikTok.
