You might recognise Melanie Herrera from your social media feed, where her sharp-witted 'Nepo Baby Vocal Warm-Up' series has clocked up millions of views and caught the attention of everyone from Hugh Jackman to the 'Dancing With the Stars' team. But whilst she’s a natural at comedy, Herrera’s latest musical venture proves she’s far more than just a viral sensation. With the release of her striking new single, 'Whatever’s Left', the New York-based artist cements her status as a premier architect of "storybook-pop."
Produced by her frequent collaborator Tiger Darrow, the track is a masterclass in emotional nuance. Darrow provides a lush, cinematic backdrop of driving synths and rich electronic textures that allow Herrera’s expressive vocals to take centre stage. The song tackles the heavy subject of family dissolution, but rather than following the typical tropes of a breakup ballad, it explores the wreckage through the eyes of a child.
“People often write about divorce, but rarely from the perspective of the child inside it,” Herrera explains. “‘Whatever’s Left’ is about the complicated grief of that experience—when something fundamental fractures outside of your control, and all you’re left with is a memory.”
The lyrics are particularly evocative, using the metaphor of a crumbling physical structure to mirror the loss of childhood stability. She sings: “what can we do when the colours bleed? / break us in two inadvertently / and you never get a say when the foundation blows away / clutching the pieces to my chest / I guess I’ll keep whatever’s left.”
Herrera’s ability to weave deep introspection into catchy pop stems from a life lived in harmony with the arts. Raised in Philadelphia by a psychotherapist and a Latin jazz musician, she grew up in a household where emotional honesty and rhythm were equally vital. After a stint in Los Angeles pursuing acting, her return to New York marked a return to her true north: songwriting.
'Whatever’s Left' is a testament to that journey—a track that feels both personal and universal. It marks the arrival of a songwriter who isn't afraid to sift through the rubble of the past to find something beautiful.
