A decade of deep-rooted friendship has finally culminated in a musical partnership that demands your attention. Paper Daisies, the Gold Coast duo comprising Britt Grey and Rhea Robertson, have stepped into the arena with a remarkably assured debut single, ‘Heartbreakin’ Cowboy’.
The track expertly bridges the gap between classic singer-songwriter storytelling and glossy, accessible pop. Rather than leaning on overproduced gimmicks, the duo wisely place their spectacular, intuitive vocal harmonies right at the centre of the mix. Supported by rich, warm instrumentation, the song captures a distinct sonic atmosphere.
“We headed into writing with the idea of creating something that felt like the end of a really good day,” they explain. “Music that kind of wraps itself around you and settles in your chest, like that lingering, hazy feeling of golden hour.”
At its heart, ‘Heartbreakin’ Cowboy’ is an exercise in vivid narrative. The concept grew from a casual chat with a close friend who found themselves trapped in a cycle of unrequited romance. It tackles the bittersweet reality of chasing a fantasy with a clever mix of sharp wit and genuine vulnerability. It acts as a comforting anthem for anyone who has ever pined after an unavailable muse.
This emotional intelligence stems directly from the creators' shared history. Their creative process relies heavily on a mutual trust built over ten years of navigating life side-by-side.
“We know each other's stories, we've lived through things together, and that depth of connection finds its way into everything we create,” they say. “We’re drawing from a shared well of experience, and we bring a perspective that is genuinely and unapologetically female.”
Brought to life at Love Street Studios in Currumbin, the track benefited from the input of co-writer and multi-instrumentalist Bradley Green. Producer Scott French handled the mixing duties, while Angus ‘Agnus’ Hawkey provided the final polish on mastering. The result is a polished, heartfelt introduction to a band that is clearly here for the long haul.
‘Heartbreakin’ Cowboy’ is available to stream now on all major digital platforms. Give it a spin, add it to your favourite playlist, and make sure to follow Paper Daisies on Instagram and Facebook to keep up with their journey.
