Melbourne’s favourite purveyors of the relatable and the ridiculous are back. Billy Cart, a five-piece band, has officially unveiled their latest single, 'Advice for a Long and Superstitious Life', marking a fascinating evolution for a band that has always embraced their heart and humour.
While the group has built a reputation for sharp-witted indie storytelling, this new offering sees them leaning into a darker, more muscular sound. Borrowing elements from grunge and alt-rock, the track feels heavier and more urgent than their previous work. It’s a sonic shift that suits them; the grit in the production provides the perfect backdrop for a lyrical exploration of the strange rituals we perform to keep the universe on our side.
The inspiration for the track is deeply personal, rooted in the Argentinian upbringing of Billy Raffin (vocals/guitar/drums). In Raffin’s household, superstitions weren't just quirky anecdotes; they were the invisible rules of engagement for daily life. From avoiding ladders to the specific ways one might ward off bad luck, the song dissects these "rules" with a blend of warmth and skepticism.
For Billy Cart, the magic lies in the mundane. By focusing on the small anxieties and cultural quirks that shape us, they’ve managed to foster a remarkably tight-knit community. As Billy puts it, “That part is very special to me. The fact that storytelling through art and music has the ability to connect people and foster the creation of shared experience, collective meaning-making, self-reflection and togetherness is the fire that keeps me going in life.”
The single was recorded at RMIT by the talented duo of Tim Johnston and Dale Mamo, with Mamo handling the mix and the renowned Joe Carra at Crystal Mastering providing the final polish.
Having already conquered the airwaves on FBi Radio, 3RRR, and 4ZZZ, and fresh off a sponsored tour by Heaps Normal, Billy Cart are rapidly becoming one of the most vital voices in the Australian indie scene. This latest release proves they aren't afraid to turn up the volume while keeping their signature wit fully intact.
