After more than a decade of silence, one of Australia's most distinctive musical voices, Nathan Hudson (known to fans as Nate Faker), has finally broken cover. The long-awaited return is heralded by the powerful new single, ‘Comet’, which provides the first electrifying glimpse into his forthcoming album, 'Enjoy Your Problems'.
The release of ‘Comet’ marks the beginning of a poignant new chapter for the artist, charting a path that has been shaped by years of searching, personal setbacks, and self-discovery across continents. Stripping away the pressure of his early, platinum-selling success with Faker, the new track captures the raw sensation of standing firm in the face of inevitable destruction, locating a vein of stubborn optimism when the world appears to be crashing down.
Explaining the track’s apocalyptic but hopeful imagery, Nate Faker says: “It’s about a comet crashing down into the middle of your street, home, neighbourhood, town, and life and trying to stand your ground, even though it feels ridiculous to do so. It’s about what the world is at the moment, and trying to find an optimistic spin. Ultimately, we’re surviving. Sometimes you can see the comet coming, and there’s no point running; you just have to face it.” The track opens with the resonant line, “You had me jump through hoops to get to your house,” a lyric that speaks volumes about the challenge of re-entering the public eye and reconnecting with an audience after a lengthy sabbatical—it is both a welcome homecoming and a bold leap into the unknown.
Hudson’s circuitous path back to music is as compelling as the song itself. Despite being told by music teachers he was unfocused or generally unsuited to music, he taught himself guitar and piano, finding solace in art and film during a childhood where he felt inherently different. He formed Faker after high school, busking between delivering pizzas, writing songs by night, and honing their frenetic live act in Sydney’s Surry Hills house parties before achieving national acclaim and festival main-stage status.
When the dizzying highs gave way to personal and industry turmoil, Hudson left Australia. He spent years wandering, taking up residence in international hubs like Los Angeles, New York, Berlin, São Paulo, and Mexico City, studying filmmaking and working various odd jobs. Yet, music refused to release its hold. Grappling with identity and neurodivergence, he channelled his experiences into his 'Map of Stars' project, assembling local bands in a different city each month to write and record two songs—a process that yielded material for the new album.
‘Comet’ pulses with kinetic guitars and infectious energy, recalling the propulsive drive of classic indie rock, but is underpinned by a distinctly personal edge. Landing on December 2nd, exactly 14 years to the day since his last new release, the track is the sound of an artist who has weathered profound storms and returned with a renewed purpose. Fans can look forward to more music and full band shows planned for 2026, including a special performance at the Adelaide Fringe Festival.
