Melbourne's acoustic indie darling, Angus Legg, has gifted us with a new single, 'Napier St', a beautifully crafted anthem of friendship and nostalgia. The track takes its name from a shared house, acting as a portal to a world of shared memories. Angus' intimate, first-person storytelling draws you into a deeply personal space, yet it feels universally relatable. The lyrics are simple, yet they paint a vivid picture, making you feel as though you're right there, sitting around a table with his mates.
For Angus, the song is a direct reflection of his most cherished bonds. He explains, "'Napier St' was written and recorded with my friends, for my friends. I remember sitting down to write it with my friends Joey and James. I said to them, we have to write the friends' song and it has to be called Napier St. An ode to the sharehouse we’ve all lived in/frequented, and other stories along the way. My friendships are my proudest achievement, this song is a drop in the ocean of gratitude I have for them, I’m stupidly proud of it though and very excited to share it”.
The track’s production is a testament to the collaborative spirit that inspired it. Close friend and fellow Melbourne artist Jim Alxndr, known for his work with the likes of Angie McMahon and Carly Rae Jepson, produced and mixed the single. Angus credits Alxndr's unique ability to create a safe, emotionally honest environment. "Jim’s superpower is providing a safe space for others to sit in their emotions, he’ll sit there with you too," Angus shares.
"He’s also incredibly sonically inventive, his passion for artistic experimentation shines through in the record. There are so many layers that create the depth and texture that you may not necessarily hear immediately, however, they all lend themselves perfectly to the emotional landscape we created. Jim orchestrated the joy in the record, he brought the vision to life, nobody else can do what he does”. The single was then mastered by Adam Lee, who has worked with acclaimed artists like Lizzy Mcalpine and Lola Young.
Following on from the success of previous releases like ‘Dopamine’ and ‘Drugs With My Friends,’ which have garnered significant support from Triple J, Spotify, and Apple Music, “Napier St” is poised to become another fan favourite. The track is a gentle, yet powerful, reminder of the importance of the people in our lives. As Angus puts it, he hopes "“Napier St” makes you want to go out and hug your friends and loved ones, it’s really the only thing that matters”. It’s a track that feels like a warm embrace, a perfect sonic souvenir of the 'good ol’ days' that encourages us to create more of them.
