Brussels’ own pop powerhouse Angèle has traded her pastel-hued whimsy for something altogether more serrated. Her latest offering, ‘What You Want’, sees her teaming up with the French electronic titans Justice, resulting in a collaboration that feels less like a polite handshake and more like a high-velocity collision. Released via Angèle VL Records, Ed Banger, and Because Music, the track arrives as a definitive statement of intent following her record-breaking appearance at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
The genesis of the track was remarkably organic. After catching a Justice set in Brussels alongside her mother in December 2024, Angèle visited the duo backstage. “I spontaneously suggested they come to the studio,” she recalls. “We spent an afternoon listening to the demos I’d been working on on my computer. I had this track, ‘What You Want,’ a slightly sultry, sensual, offbeat song I’d written. But since I wasn’t completely satisfied with it, I’d put it aside.”
Xavier de Rosnay and Gaspard Augé of Justice were immediately struck by her technical prowess, noting that “she’s an excellent musician and producer.” They took her demo and injected it with their signature industrial swagger. As Angèle puts it: “They brought a power to the track that the intention and balance had been missing. Bringing our worlds together without losing our identities — that’s the greatest success of this song!”
The result is a bilingual floor-filler where Angèle’s breathy, intimate vocals dance over Justice’s muscular, rock-tinted synthesisers. It’s a sophisticated evolution for an artist who has already conquered Netflix, CHANEL runways, and Coachella. Justice echoes this sentiment, stating: “Although her music is different from ours, the track called for something sensual and brutal that we instinctively connected with, without compromise.”
Accompanying the single is a gritty, nocturnal music video directed by the visionary collective (LA)HORDE. Shot entirely on an iPhone 17 Pro in the backstreets of Marseille, the film captures Angèle and dancer Nora Monsecour in a fluid, choreographic chase through laundromats and dive bars. (LA)HORDE noted the importance of the pairing, stating: “We found it incredibly exciting to support this meeting between the fathers of electro and Angèle’s own universe.”
