Human Intrusion are back, and they are taking us on a vibrant journey. The Melbourne-based duo, comprised of Lewis O’Brien and Penny Walker-Keefe, are set to release their first new piece of music since their acclaimed self-titled 2023 EP. The track, 'Ultraviolet,' is a dream-pop odyssey that marks a new chapter for the project, refining their signature blend of industrial, new wave, and shoegaze into a more textured and atmospheric soundscape.
Set for release this Friday, 15th August, but premiering early with us, 'Ultraviolet' is a kaleidoscope of sonic elements, an ecstatic fever dream of bright, shimmering guitars and powerful, soaring vocals set against a backdrop of metallic drums. While the band’s sound is built on the foundations of 80s post-punk and new wave stalwarts like The Cure and Depeche Mode, it’s also threaded with the influence of contemporary artists like Tame Impala, making for a sound that is both a homage to the past and a bold step into the future.
Science was a significant source of inspiration for the pair while writing new material, and 'Ultraviolet' in particular stemmed from their fascination with sunlight. The track explores the paradox of its beauty and its capacity for destruction. As Penny explains, "We’re nerds. We read about physics in bed for fun. The song came together with phrases that borrow from physics, like the ionising nature of ultraviolet radiation, and of course, a smidge of rainbow-flecked psychedelia.”
The project itself was born out of the hazy days of Melbourne’s 2020 lockdowns, a period of creative retreat for O’Brien, who had been developing new ideas for a fresh project. When Walker-Keefe offered her help, she was quickly enlisted to handle lyric duties. The initial creative process was a little awkward, with both musicians hesitant to share their ideas. However, the project quickly evolved into a collaboration that was organic, fluid, and honest.
The duo produced 'Ultraviolet' themselves in their home studio, with Lewis O'Brien also taking on mixing duties. The track was then mastered by the highly respected John Lee at Phaedra Studios, whose impressive credits include Sunfruits, The Murlocs, and Laura Jean.
'Ultraviolet' is an exciting and radiant new chapter for Human Intrusion. The single is a testament to the band’s artistic growth, showcasing a more refined and atmospheric sound that is distinctly their own.
