Her music tells real stories inspired by her life and emotions, covering everything from friendships and family to dreams and disappointments.
Recently, Madilynn's third single, ‘Ride or Die’, dropped, tackling themes of betrayal and inner strength. The celebrate, we were lucky enough to chat with Madilynn to find out a bit more about the track, along with some of her upcoming plans.
It’s great to chat with you today, Madilynn. You’re only young, but when did you first start making music? Was there always a passion for it?
“As far back as I can remember, I’ve always made-up songs as a small child but then my family noticed my voice and I started to take it more seriously around age 8. That’s when I began writing my first song called ‘Girls Can Like Blue’ which we eventually recorded in Nashville when I was 9. My family is big into music and my uncle Kevin has a band called Island Mike & Friends. I sing with them frequently on offend stages around New England. I once sang on a float at local parade and seeing all those kids faces smiling and clapping for me.. that’s when I knew. The stage is where I want to be.”
“It’s my happy place. My Memah passed away in 2023 and that’s when it all started to unfold and I became very busy with writing and performing at different venues. Mom and I went to Nashville and I recorded my first song and wrote another song with my producer the day after I performed at the Bluebird cafe with my ukulele. Nashville Dream was my first song release at age 9. I began to write more and more and worked closely with my producer Ryan Smith in Nashville. I have released two singles with my third called ‘Ride Or Die’ released today.”
Touching on your new single, it’s just come out and already making waves. Can you tell us a bit about it and what it means to you?
“’Ride Or Die’ was written while feeling betrayed from some of my so-called friends. I started to rethink my friend choices and realised that some people we think are friends are “fake” and just by your side when they feel like it and when it’s convenient for them. I wrote this song because I know that I’m not the only one who has so called “friends” and hope that others can relate.”
Were there any artists that influenced you when writing the release, maybe some that you turned to in that moment?
“I like to think this song has a Grace Potter sort of attitude and style. I wanted to sound fierce and call these so-called friends out in a sort of way that doesn’t directly speak to any of them individually. I am not okay with fake friends. Honesty and respect and trust and loyalty is what I live by. I sort of thought about fake friends and a movie and blended the ideas together in this song. I like the way it turned out!”
What was your songwriting process for the release? How did you take that feeling and put it to music?
“As I strummed my guitar like usual when writing, I heard a melody in my head that just struck me, and it all fell into place. It felt like fake friends are like actors. So, then I plotted my story as sort of like a movie relating fake friends with a movie since they “act” so well. I went back to Nashville and recorded it in the studio back in March. I was going to wait and release it on my first EP at the end of summer, but I wanted people to hear it before then.”
How would you describe the sound on your latest release? Has there been a change or evolution in style since you first began?
“I love the country rock style in this song. The violin in the ding gives it whole bigger feel. I wanted to the song to be bold and catchy. I am mostly country, pop and now some rock! I’ve got an electric guitar in my song as well.”
You’ve spoke about fake friends and that feeling of betrayal. Was that something you were trying to convey in the single?
“I like to think the chorus sends a message people can relate to. When I sing “your social skills are a hot mess, you act like everyone’s friend but it’s all a lie” I’m hoping for others to think about their friends too because a lot of them are just acting and it can be hurtful. “I’d rather choose death, then be your ride or die” the bold statement in my chorus – I’m putting the point across boldly here. I wanted to make a statement. ‘Ride Or Die’ friends are hard to come by. I know I have at least one named Anna. She will always be my ‘Ride Or Die’ bestie.”
Looking ahead, what are your aspirations as an artist? Where do you see yourself in the next few years, both musically and personally?
“My goal is to keep playing my instruments, singing and writing while my mom finishes her nursing degree. I would like to keep performing any chance I get. My uncle Kev and Island Mike always offer me gigs and I LOVE performing with their band. I’m very comfortable on stage with them and they have helped me and guided me and carried me along the way in my musical journey even though I’m only 10. Eventually I want to go on tour and sing for all my fans on the big stages. Music is my life. I was born for this.”
What's next after this release? Do you have any new releases or shows on the horizon?
“I have finished recording my first EP in Nashville with my amazing producer Ryan Smith who’s also a singer songwriter. Mom is taking care of everything that goes on behind the scenes when it comes to releasing an EP because I have no clue about that stuff. I just write and sing. There are 6 songs to enjoy. I didn’t really want to release ‘Girls Can Like Blue’ since I was 8 when I wrote it and my skills have improved so much. My voice sounds so young in it too. There is a surprise cover song included in my EP which I’m super excited about.”
What sort of reception have you had to your music so far? Are there any memorable moments that stand out?
“’Born With Wings’ was released in April of 2025. It’s also the name of my upcoming EP. It means so much to me. I was basically born without a heartbeat, and doctors were unsure if I was going to survive. I had heart surgery when I was a week old and was sick for quite a while. I feel like I was allowed to stay on this earth for a reason.”
“My Mom played the song at my latest cardiology appt and the whole team of cardiologists and nurses came in to listen as well. Dr. Donnelly saved my life. He will always be held close to my heart. Mom was filled with tears when they listened. It’s just a hug heart felt song with how I survived and how far I have come. And also, how far I’ll go. Anything is possible!”
Is there anything you would like to say to our audience? How can they connect with you and help support you?
“I’m so grateful for my fans and my family and my true friends for making my life what it is today. I’m very excited for my future. I hope everyone enjoys my first album. I don’t have the exact date yet, but it will be summer 2025. I also have merch coming soon! I also want to thank everyone who has donated to my album fund. Many fans have donated and family and friends making this dream of mine possible. I couldn’t have done it without you guys!”
