Wavy James on ‘Jasmyn Interlude’ and the Return of Real R&B

The modern R&B landscape is often criticised for prioritising vibe over vulnerability, but Wavy James is here to shift the narrative. An emerging force in the R&B and Trap Soul scene, James has carved out a space for himself by leaning into the kind of raw, emotional storytelling that feels both nostalgic and refreshingly current. His sound is a deliberate fusion of smooth melodies and gritty honesty, designed to resonate with anyone who has navigated the messy highs and lows of real-life growth.

At the heart of his artistic introduction is the debut single, 'Jasmyn Interlude'. A deeply personal record born from the ashes of his first love, the track serves as a sonic time capsule of regret and self-reflection. It is more than just a song; it is a manifesto for his brand—one built on authenticity and the courage to be vulnerable. As he prepares to leave a permanent mark on the industry, Wavy James is proving that the most powerful music comes from the places we are often too afraid to revisit.

In this interview, we dive into his early SoundCloud roots, the therapeutic process behind his latest release, and his mission to bring "yearning" back to the genre.

Wavy, thanks so much for joining us today! You have a very distinct, soulful sound. When did you first start making music, and what were the original influences that sparked your journey?

"I first started making music back in 2014, doing song covers on SoundCloud inspired by artists like Chris Brown, Drake, and Justin Bieber. At the time, it was just something I did for fun—I never really took it serious or tried to build anything from it. Earlier this year, I started recording again just for the love of it and shared some songs with my friends. The response was real—they genuinely connected with it and pushed me to start releasing my own music. That’s really what sparked everything for me. Now I’m fully stepping into my sound, creating R&B that people can actually feel. I grew up on projects like ‘Take Care’ and ‘Trap Soul’, and those heavily shaped my direction. I want to bring that same emotional depth back—music that’s honest, relatable, and hits you in a real way."

Your latest release feels incredibly intimate. Can you tell us about the story behind the record and what it represents for you as an artist?

"My latest release, ‘Jasmyn Interlude’, is really my introduction into the music world. It’s a deeply personal R&B record centered around my first love—touching on heartbreak, love, and regret. It’s one of those songs where I wasn’t holding anything back, just being completely honest about how I felt and what I went through. The production plays a big role too—it pulls you in from the start and keeps you there, with melodies that stick with you even after the song ends. I wanted it to feel immersive, like you’re really inside that moment with me. Sonically, I was inspired by that 2015 era—artists like Bryson Tiller and PARTYNEXTDOOR—when R&B had that raw, emotional feel to it. Back when music made you feel something real. That’s what I wanted to bring back with this record. For me, this song means everything because it’s not just music—it’s my story, my growth, and the start of me really stepping into who I am as an artist."

The track captures a very specific type of pain. What was your actual songwriting process like for this release?

"I look at writing music as therapy for me. I went through a pretty tough heartbreak last year involving my first love, and ‘Jasmyn Interlude’ came from finally sitting down and putting those emotions into words. It wasn’t forced — it was more like I needed an outlet, and music became that space for me to process everything I was feeling. I also found myself listening to a lot of darker R&B records for inspiration, which helped shape the tone and mood of the song. I wanted it to feel raw, emotional, and honest — like you’re hearing someone’s real thoughts in the middle of heartbreak. Once the concept was there, everything else came naturally. The melodies, lyrics, and delivery all came from a genuine place, which is why the record feels so personal."

Looking at the bigger picture, what are your long-term aspirations? Where do you hope to see yourself in the next few years?

"Looking ahead, my main goal is to make timeless music that people can actually feel and connect with. I grew up influenced by the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s R&B era — when songs had emotion, substance, and replay value. That shaped my ear sonically, so I naturally gravitate toward music that has depth and meaning. In the next few years, I see myself building a strong catalogue of records that stand the test of time, not just songs that are here today and gone tomorrow. I feel like a lot of music today lacks that emotional connection — the yearning, the vulnerability, the storytelling. I want to bring that feeling back. Personally, I just want to grow as an artist and as a person, continue telling real stories, and create music people can relate to at different stages of their lives. My vision is to build a sound that’s nostalgic but still modern — something that reminds people why they fell in love with R&B in the first place."

Now that the single is out, what’s next on the horizon? Are there more releases or live shows in the works?

"After this release, I plan to keep building momentum by consistently dropping new singles and visuals over the next few months. My focus right now is growing my catalogue and letting listeners really connect with the sound I’m creating. Each release will continue to build the story and emotional tone I introduced with 'Jasmyn Interlude'. I’m also working toward releasing a full mixtape around this fall. The project will expand on the themes of love, heartbreak, and vulnerability, while continuing to bring that yearning feeling back to modern R&B. I want every release to feel intentional and part of a bigger picture. As things continue to grow, I’m definitely open to live performances and showcases as well. Right now, it’s all about building the foundation, growing the fanbase, and delivering consistent, meaningful music."

Finally, is there a message you’d like to share with your listeners, and how can they best support your journey?

"I just want to say thank you to everyone taking the time to listen and support. ‘Jasmyn Interlude’ is a very personal record, and my goal is to bring back music that people can truly feel and connect with. If you enjoy real R&B and emotional storytelling, you’re going to resonate with what I’m building. You can connect with me and follow the journey on all platforms — I’m active and always engaging with listeners. The best way to support me is by streaming the music, adding it to playlists, sharing it with someone who’s been through heartbreak, and following me on social media @Wavy James. This is just the beginning — more music, visuals, and stories are on the way."

As Wavy James continues to bridge the gap between the golden eras of R&B and the contemporary Trap Soul sound, his commitment to honesty remains his greatest asset. With a mixtape on the way and a growing community of listeners who find solace in his lyrics, the journey of Wavy James is only just beginning. He isn't just making music; he's capturing the human experience, one interlude at a time.
