From Screen to Song: An Exclusive Interview with Libby Dietrix

From Screen to Song: An Exclusive Interview with Libby Dietrix

Whether on the screen or in the studio, Libby Dietrix is a force to be reckoned with. An artist, composer, writer, singer, actor, producer, and dancer, she began performing at the age of nine and hasn't stopped since. Best known for her debut album, ‘Undergrad’, as well as her roles in the films ‘Moondance’ and ‘Romance Idealism’, her latest work, the album ‘Mixed-Up Files’, showcases an exploration of her artistic evolution.

The new album is a collection of songs produced during her earlier collaborations with music talents Dre Manuel and Aaron Sumlin but have not been available for public enjoyment until now. The availability of these previously unreleased tracks feels like uncovering hidden gems.

Her journey is a testament to the idea that creative energy can ebb and flow, only to be reignited later with compelling urgency, as seen with her latest single, ‘Proof’. We caught up with Libby to discuss the creative process behind her album ‘Mixed-Up Files’, her new single ‘Proof’, and what’s next for her.

It’s so great to chat with you today, Libby; thanks for stopping by! When did you first start making music? Where did it all begin, and what inspired you?

“I have been writing songs since I was a little kid. My grandma tells me about how I once posted a song I wrote about penguins online. I must have been seven or so at the time. She asked what would happen if someone took my song, and I said I would write another one.”

Can you tell us a bit about your latest release, ‘Proof’, and what it means to you?

“My latest release is called 'Proof' and it is about feeling the need to explain yourself in an impossible situation where the people who you would expect to have your back most are the ones accusing you.”

Are there any artists, moments, or experiences that influenced you when writing the release?

“The producer Dre Manuel brought this song to life, and since my last full album ‘Mixed-Up Files’ is music uncovered that I made back in 2019-2020, I thought I’d dig even further back and found this gem. It deserves to be heard.”

What was your songwriting process for the release? How did it all come together?

“I wrote it when the feelings felt raw and the words flowed to me. I contacted Dre about recording, and we made this song happen. It had to simmer a bit and then I was ready to deliver it to you.”

How would you describe the sound on your latest release? Has there been a change or evolution in style since you first began?

“It is a bit more sombre than some of the songs on my album. I wanted the album to end on an upbeat dance feel and honestly wanted to get 'Proof' out as soon as I found it, so the sound is from earlier in my songwriting career and a bit of a heavier connotation.”

Is there a central message or theme you were trying to convey in your latest release? Is there a moment in the release that really captures that idea?

“The message here is to stop trying to prove yourself to people who do not want to see your truth. Build your community for yourself and be strong; you will get through anything that comes your way.”

Looking ahead, what are your aspirations as an artist? Where do you see yourself in the next few years, both musically and personally?

“I see myself continuing to share music on a global level and connect with more people and share more stories.”

What's next after this release? Do you have any new releases or shows on the horizon?

“I have many new releases with producers from Scotland to Mexico in the works for you… get ready!”

What sort of reception have you had to your latest release? Are there any memorable moments that stand out?

“People love it! They were surprised by the switch up in tone and found it to be saucy.”

Is there anything you would like to say to our audience? How can they connect with you and help support you?

“Thank you for listening and receiving this music. It is a gift to share with you. Follow on Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube to stay connected on our journeys together.”
