A Chat with Upton Green Records About Their Historic New Release

Stepping into a recording studio often feels special, but imagine laying down tracks in the very room where The Beatles once fine-tuned their sound. That's exactly what six talented local musicians had the chance to do over the past couple of years, crafting their original songs in a former Beatles rehearsal space in Liverpool. These incredible tracks now form the backbone of the brand-new album, ‘Something New at Upton Green’, a compilation featuring the diverse talents of Morgan Wood, Liz Owen, Clark Gilmour, Shannon Peterson, Cal Ruddy, and The Falling Doves.

We recently caught up with Ken Lambert, General Manager of Upton Green Records, to delve into the fascinating story behind this historic release. From the initial spark of inspiration for these artists to the unique sounds captured within those hallowed walls and what's next for the Merseyside music scene, Ken gave us the inside scoop.

Thanks for chatting with us today, Ken. This is quite a new project and recorded in such a special place. Where did it all begin, and how did it all come together?

“The six artists on this compilation are varied, some started with music professionally just 4-5 years ago, but others close to 20 years ago. Each has their own specific story, but all have a connection to Liverpool and the Merseyside music scene.”

This album is a historic new release, with new songs recorded in the very living room that John Lennon, Paul McCartney, and George Harrison often rehearsed in during the early Beatle years.”

How would you describe the sound on the album, do all the artists share a similar style, or is it a bit more varied?

“The six songs are varied and cross some different musical tastes and themes. The two women featured on the album, Liz Owen and Shannon Peterson, have strong and powerful voices and they each play guitar with a passion that is evident. Morgan Wood offers a well-constructed pop song which features his unique voice in a catchy tune.”

“Both Cal Ruddy and Clark Gilmour exude a certain Americana and folksy character with their original songs. The Falling Doves record their acoustic song as a duo, with a vibe characteristic of indie and alternative music.”

Is there a central message or theme you were trying to convey when putting this project together?

“The artists all feel lucky and fortunate to be able to have the experience of recording in one of the most important places in British rock music history.”

The album will be released on vinyl only, and available very soon. What's next for the artists after this release?

“All musicians are actively touring and gigging throughout the Northwest part of the UK, and elsewhere.”

And there you have it – a glimpse into ‘Something New at Upton Green’, an album that's not just a collection of songs, but a testament to Liverpool's enduring musical spirit and the incredible talent bubbling within its vibrant scene.

With artists actively touring and gigging across the Northwest and beyond, it's clear this release is just the beginning for these musicians, and we eagerly await what exciting sounds will emerge next from the historic grounds of Upton Green.
